Art and Technology for Community Learning and Women's Empowerment

In this presentation, the pedagogical power of visual communication design in challenging social problems and affecting social change will be discussed. The focus will be on the issue of gender violations in Iran. The presentation will begin with a brief exploration of the socio-political, cultural, and historical genesis of the violations of women’s rights in Iran. Then the pedagogical design intervention which is a campaign comprised of posters and a user-generated content web application will be presented. In this project, design and creativity are implemented to facilitate interactive communication, collective knowledge creation, and social activism. The goal is to examine how democratic knowledge created through “creativity,” “dialogue,” and “collaboration” can empower marginalized populations, cultivate critical consciousness, and bring about social emancipation.
